Musings from The Sawdust Sage™
I’ve recently received a number of emails and messages asking about As a Man Thinketh, the short philosophical book written by James Allen (1864–1912) and first published in 1903.
Despite the gray hair, I should clarify that I am neither English nor was I around at the time of its publication.
While I agree with many of the book’s core principles and respect its enduring influence, I can’t take credit for my namesake’s work. That James Allen lived, wrote, and thought in a very different time and context.
My own writing—whether under The Sawdust Sage™ or Seamus Ailin™—comes from lived experience, quiet observation, and a lifelong habit of paying attention to ordinary moments. If there are echoes between my work and As a Man Thinketh, they’re shared human truths rather than shared authorship.

I appreciate the thoughtful messages, and I’m always glad to talk about ideas that have stood the test of time—but credit where credit is due.

About the Sawdust Sage™
After 30 years of stress, deadlines, and a corporate grind sharp enough to turn a blade into dust, James Allen, The Sawdust Sage™ decided it was time to pivot. As a retired IT project manager he now channels his creativity into woodworking alongside storytelling. When he's not shaping pieces for All*En Crafts™ or creating cards for Rock & Gnome Greetings™, James can be found reflecting on life, finding joy in the small things, and sharing his thoughts with others through writing. https://tinyurl.com/Sawdust-Sage
